Good question. This actually happened a while back, but monkeypox and mpox is the same thing. You might be hearing Mpox in the news a lot at the moment. That's because in parts of Africa, there's been a major outbreak of a dangerous strain of the disease, which can cause flu like symptoms, skin lesions over the body, and can be fatal. The World Health Organization has declared it as a public health emergency of international concern, and Sweden reported its first case of the same strain on Thursday.

Npox can be passed on by close contact with anyone with the infection. Here in the UK, health bosses say they're making plans in case it's detected in the country, but they emphasize the risk is low. But why has it got this new name? Well, monkeypox was renamed to Mpox in 2022 by the World Health Organization following concerns that racist and stigmatizing language was being linked to the virus name. The organization has since published a vice on naming diseases, saying they shouldn't cause offense to any social, cultural, national, ethnic groups or negatively impact trade, tourism, travel, or animal welfare.
