Behind the Mic

That was wild. The Hualien. Is Ryan you want to take this one? Yeah, yeah, sure. So I’ll take this one. So what does it mean stalled? It means that it’s not progressing or hasn’t been progressing for some time. And there’s a usual sense of frustration coming from that. Yeah, okay. And just to build on that, the way that I’ve described this to a couple of people is nodes normally allow individuals or companies to build their own applications in any geographic region or any hardware without having to be tied into an existing platform. What’s interesting about this is that nodes are capable of running on standard desktop hardware and there’s no need to have expensive rack-mounted server hardware, which means it’s extremely accessible. So you can start your node on hardware as long as it’s fast enough. And you get ecosystem partners right at the start. So I’ll explain a little bit more about the incentives for creating blocks and the benefits for stakers. Coming up. But it’s important to understand that these things that have been discussed before like the gray area that Ryan talked about before with blocks, that happens on every blockchain. One of my famous quotes is that the L1 security is important because any consensus breaking event, anything that causes nodes or miners to disagree on which blocks are created first, that’s actually most of those are cases where the miners are working and would work around them, such causes as spam attacks or empty blocks being spammed to bloat the state or DDoS attacks that would cause miners to be cut off from the rest of the network, or mining pools colluding. But what’s interesting is that we’ve taken sort of a fresh new approach to what blocks are so that if miners make these types of good blocks, they’re rewarded and it helps preventing these types of malicious attacks. And briefly, I can mention these incentives as well. So this project uses a proof-of-stake network, not proof-of-work or a proof-of-space. Why does that provide better security? Because we’ve changed the way that validators behave. Validators are no longer just machines that register attestations, but they’re also attesters of consensus in our system. So when our validators claim rewards, they have an economic interest in ensuring that consensus has been reached correctly as well as they would be penalized or their staked funds slashed if they try to claim those incorrect reward blocks. And this is very important because it means that our consensus is attested to by parties that have an economic stake in being truthful about the state of the chain. So unlike other projects which assume that validators are both participants of consensus and miners, for us there’s a very clear distinction between the two. Apart from this, we also allow individuals to democratize the process of producing blocks by delegating. Basically, there’s thousands of people choosing to delegate their stake to their servers. And this allows for better geographic distribution of stake across various servers and hardware. Why? Because we’re no longer limited by geographical location or needing to be in the same room as a big mining pool, but people can build their own servers from spare hardware from old gaming PCs or old laptops, and build their own servers to run these projects, participate in producing blocks and validating blocks for the chain. Now, about spam transactions that I mentioned earlier, there’s also incentives for people to hold on to low-valued coins and stake them. So this way the low price of the coin when there is less individual interest in the node, that keeps the overall economic security high. And staking is another very important property of our project because the stake volume indeed dictates the economic security of the blockchain and it makes collusion even less likely than it already is. And as well, when there are multiple staking pools, it also allows the network to be signaled that there is a lot of work happening on the chain at any given point in time. I will be closing off, but I want to leave you with a simple thought. Blockchain by itself is a novel solution to a digital problem that seeks to solve problems that, you know, never had solutions for as long as the FTC being broken or down for DDoS attacks, things like spam transactions or crypto mining being regulated. Blockchain’s benefit is that it allows a distributed democratic decentralized ledger to solve these issues, which will hopefully usher us into a new wave of secure, permissionless computational systems. We should never forget that. With that, I’d like to put forth a special thanks to all our participants as well as listeners for joining. Take care and stay safe.
