Behind the Mic

Photographers and Their Stories

A moment ago, I asked a photographer who he was and he said he's with the AP. And now another man's here with the UPI. And they tell me a story. Who? Oh, you're from Channel two. They tell me. Tell me a story. Has just moved on the wire that my contract has not been renewed. My contract signed up until December 31, and nobody has told me anything yet. So apparently somebody has told somebody something. At the end of 25 years, you think that at least let you know without the press being all over you, at the end of 25 years, they usually give you a gift. They're going to give me a kick on the. You know what?

Reflections on Career Ending

It's not just you, Scott. It's not just you. Oh, man. Was that Harry? How about that? It was actually was a regular broadcast. 58 or 59, something like that. Yeah. Finding out that he was fired by the Cardinals. You know, I was thinking yesterday, there's a, a great story. I think most people think of Lee Corso as a pretty good dude. You know, he's pretty funny and he's, he wasn't the greatest coach, but he found out he was getting fired by Indiana on the radio as he was driving to an Indiana booster meeting in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Wow. And he went to the meeting and talked about what a great school it was and how he had been honored to work there and people should still support him.

Reactions to Coaching Changes

You know, who knows how any of us would react, but when you couldn't have that kind of style in class, and I thought service handled it, you know, that's obviously like the worst part of what was a pretty bad day yesterday. And, you know, I think it was pro, I don't know, maybe a logistics thing with the team arriving as late as it did, they really got back from LA at like five in the morning and who knows how it came out the way it did. Well, for an organization that botches a lot of things, it doesn't seem that surprising to me. And that's the thing. They've just got a track record of stuff and, you know, it's. I don't know. I'd like to think it wasn't done purposely.

Outlook for Team's Future

I think. And it may have just been Ken Rosenthal being a good reporter, you've got to recognize that possibility that was it. Do I? Do I really? Well, you don't have to do anything you don't want to. Hell, I don't give a crap what you recognize. You barely recognize me anymore when I come to see you. So what the hell do I know? But it does. It, you know, it's unfortunately. And you just kind of think, you know, so you make the decision, what, Thursday night? I mean, I don't know. It just, it was that, it was a bad part of a bad day in terms of Scott's service, you know, and in the end, he puts out a statement thanking everybody, you know, again, he's had nine years and so weep.

Issues with Organizational Philosophy

Not for him, but, and in those nine years, as we talked about last week, five playoff games, I got laughing. Gross. And you can't pin all this on him, but there's a philosophy down there that's clearly not working. Nine years, five playoff games, one of them at home. The home playoff game, you may remember, because for 18 innings they didn't score a run and struck out 22 times. But when that given us a portent of the future. Yeah. You know, and just the offense, whatever they're trying to. And it's funny that guys keep leaving here and suddenly start hitting better. Tie. France being the latest.

Managerial Changes and Hope

He's not setting the world on fire, but he added 20 points to his average in a couple of weeks. There's something not clicking and we turn our lonely eyes to Dan Wilson and hope he can find a way to push the right button and get it going. Because, you know, the other thing that you have to realize, I think most people do, there's nothing that makes you feel this team sitting on a hot streak, but they're not out of it yet. They got a big mountain, but they're not out of it. They've got a chance to get back in it. If they could start figuring out a way to score some runs. And that's a big if.

Remaining Games and a New Voice

Yeah. I mean, they only got 34 games left. They probably have to win 24 of them, I would think, to have even a shot at it. And they haven't played that way for most of the year. But, you know, you do get a new voice in there. I mean, he's familiar to most of the guys, but a new voice in there, which makes a lot of sense. You bring back Edgar Martinez, which makes a lot of sense. You know, I heard people complaining about the 95 thing. Going back to that. Well, well, you know what, 95 team did exactly what this team has to do, made an incredible comeback. So I don't think it's such a bad idea there.

Critique on Coaching Experience

I also hear people talk about, you know, Dan Wilson's lack of experience, which is not really a factor, I don't think anymore in the majors. I mean, we've seen Craig Council being the most recent, one of the most recent examples of it. He's been great with the brewers. He's been at them in the playoffs the last couple of years. Brad Austin is another one who's been good. There have been some who've done bad, but, you know, the last guy was, by the way, was high without any managerial experience. Who's that? I'll give you one guess.

Managerial Changes Discussion

Scott service. Scott service is correct. So, I mean, not necessarily ringing endorsement of it, but it's not a terrible thing to do. Aaron Boone did it. I mean, you know, it's. I think he's an interesting choice. I think, you know, he's gonna have a new GM next year to deal with, and I think that might be. That's gonna be an interesting choice, too, because I do think that, you know, the Potos got to go when the season's over, unless they somehow make it to the playoffs and win a series or two. Right. He's got to go. He's got to go.

Future Management Prospects

So you'd bring in someone else at that point, and, you know, a lot of different candidates for whatnot. But I think Dan Wilson has got a. Got a real shot at being a very good manager. Well, it's not like he's now, you know, building fences or selling, you know, cars or something. Radials. You know, he's been around baseball every day of his life since he was a kid, you know. So you say you don't have any experience. Well, yeah, except he's been around the game, and he's been around some bright people, and he's a smart guy himself.

Leadership Qualities and Future Outlook

He's, I think, kind of a natural born leader. I'm not sure how at this point in the season, unless you just want to say, well, they should have just made him interim. In which case, you're saying, all right, you have no chance at success. The interim manager, there's no, you know, so he's not stupid.

Interim Management Debate

He's like, I'm not going to be the interim manager. You know, you want me, you got me, and I'll do it. And there's nobody like, let's just use Joe Madden. And a lot of people have cooled on him. But let's say you wanted to go after him. Is he going to let depot hire him when he knows that in a month, there's a good chance depot will be gone, and suddenly he's looking across the table at a guy who didn't hire him? No, he's not. Whereas Wilson doesn't have to uproot his life, doesn't have to do anything except get to the ballpark now a little earlier and be there. And it may work. I mean, it may not. We'll all find out together.

Mariners' Management Insights

Yeah, it definitely may, though. And I get a feeling that they got an idea who that general manager is going to be already. I got a feeling he's already in house somewhere and is already signed off on the Dan Wilson thing. But it's all for the offseason that happened. And I think, you know, what the Mariners need now? I mean, I've never forgotten, I've said this to you before, what Pinello said in 95 when it was about five weeks left to go in the season, and I think I was doing one of the pregame shows with him and said, well, this is really the time of managers shines, isn't it? You know, going down the stretch in a independent race? He says, actually, no. He says, you know, this is time for the players. I've done everything I can do to get them in the spot. It's up to the players now. I think Wilson knows that.

Creating Relaxation in the Game

Wilson takes that to heart and he just creates a buffer. Just, just creates a, you know, once you guys just relax, don't worry about anything, just go out and play the game and, you know, and that pressure is gone now. Don't sweat it, and let's just have a good time for the last month and a half. And I, you know, that we've seen it work before. I don't know why. Couldn't necessarily work here. But, you know, it's going to be still a tall task to make the postseason and a tall task to make with anything but a, one of the more disappointing seasons in mariner history. And that's saying something.

Player's Mindset and Performance

And, you know, and the last ten days, the players have known. They're not any, everybody knew. In some ways, you should have just done this in the middle of the road trip because you could just feel they started to look, Dave, and I think it was more a pressing thing, but I, and I don't say this lightly because I'm really questioning professionalism by saying this, but they started to look like a team that didn't care. And I don't think that's true, but it's like, geez, you're sitting there watching them, and I'm watching them 3000 miles away going, they're going to lose this game. They're going to find a way to blow this game. Well, the players probably thought that you're right a new voice.

The Future with Dan Wilson

And look, the worst that happens is Wilson falls on his face or the team just doesn't get it done. And at the end of this, you go, okay, well, we're going to have to do something else, which you were probably going to have to do anyway, and I don't think that'll happen. I think Dan will surprise people. This is not just, let's bring back a nostalgia guy. This is, this guy's been around and has been around the sport. And when you filled in for a couple of days with Tacoma a few years back, he's been the Miley roving instructor. So, I mean, he's been around the system, as you pointed out, ever since he kind of went away.

Familiarity with the Team

Yeah, he's going to be back. I mean, he's not completely inexperienced in this organization. He knows a lot of people. And look, I've never had any problem with bringing back guys from the team's most successful run. What the hell is wrong with that? Why do people think that's a bad idea? These are the guys who found a way to win in this uniform, in this town. Yeah. And Dan found a way to hit in both the kingdom and this Hitler's wonder of a ballpark they're in now. Dan was part of a team in zero one that set all kinds offensive records playing in this same park.

Offensive Challenges

A thousand runs. You know, I know the game has changed. I know not anybody is hitting as well as they were as a team, say, five years ago, but the Mariners are last or dead last in almost every offensive category. Something is not working. And Dan also strikes me as somebody who's willing to sit in an office and go, no, we're not going to do this because we're going to do that. We're going to try this. This that we've tried for nine years isn't working. We're going to try something else.

Expectations for the Season

I sure hope so, because that's what it felt like to me, was service's one downfall, was it just felt like he was so loyal to the process and the system and the analytics and the lefty righty and all this. Occasionally you got to manage by how your butt cheeks feel, what feels like the thing to try right now. And it felt like he never did that. And I liked him. I liked him. I thought he was a steady hand. I thought the way he guided them through some things was impressive. But, boy, just the. And they've got to figure out a way organizationally to get back to letting pitchers go a little deeper.

Strategic Changes Required

Into games because you're finding out when you count on your bullpen every single night, very few bullpens are going to come through every single night. Right. You've definitely got a starting staff here where that shouldn't be an issue, right? Absolutely. So I'm interested in seeing what happens in the next 34 games, obviously, and the offseason and how much a different approach this will be for the Mariners going forward. I don't think it's the end of analytics, by the way. I don't think that's going away.

Future Developments

No. Dan Wilson is hired. What'd you say? I agree with you. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, they're still going to be there, but, I mean, it was not working, Scott. Service didn't do anything for me one way or the other. I have nothing against him, but I didn't think he was anything special as a manager. We'll see if Dan Wilson is. We'll see if Dan Wilson is. Hey, you know what? We might have some controversy with the Seahawks.

Emerging Issues in Football

Oh, what did I miss? Is there some controversy? I don't know if you missed anything, but it's more about Gino Smith wanting to get a contract extended. I think you heard some rumors about that, right? Yeah, yeah. And at the same time, young. A young quarterback, you know, Sam Howell. You heard that name? Oh, yeah. He's playing really well. Yeah. It's just in the spring, so, I mean, preseason, so it doesn't necessarily mean anything, but it's. I'm not saying it's a controversy at this moment, but, you know, remember, this is.

New Regimes and Player Contracts

We just talked about it with Dan Wilson, and, you know, having a new coach or a new regime come in that you're not indebted to. And that's the case with.

Seahawks and Team Dynamics

With Seahawks now. You know, it was Pete Carroll and those guys who brought in. Well, no, Pete wasn't still here when they brought in. How. How was there when McDonald was there. Right. Yeah. Right, right. They brought in a quarterback that the new. New coach thinks is good, obviously, and it's not. Not necessarily, you know, a ringing endorsement of him or a hit to Gino, but, you know, Gino wasn't his guy. So it's. I think that I see some seeds being planted for something like that if Gino does not start out well, and I like. I like Gino, I think he's fine.

Gino's Future and Expectations

But. But this. And he's got to do what he thinks is best for him. I get that. This is not a time to be doing it with a brand new coach, and look again, what are the expectations for the Seahawks this year? I think they're modest. So if there's ever a year where you're going to go, you know what? We're going to go away from you and try somebody new, this could be the year. And, you know, I don't think you want to give them an excuse to do that if you're Gino. By the same token, he has his own feeling about what his value is and wants to look ahead to it. But this whole year with a brand new staff, brand new everything.

Season Predictions

How many. Games they're going to win this year? Graz. Well, we'll set the record straight in a couple. Eight and nine win team maybe at best, maybe they surprised us, but it doesn't feel like it to me. Well, what, they've been the last, weren't they eight, nine and eight the last two years? Yeah, yeah, something like that. I mean, yeah, I mean, by the way, that's what they've done with Gino, which is not necessarily great stuff. But I agree with you. I think, you know, you've had a bunch of changes. You've had a bunch of changes the last two days in the linebacking core and the defensive core. So, I mean, putting things together should take some time.

Fans' Expectations

You would assume so. I don't, I'm not, my expectations for them are not that high, but, you know, Seahawk fans are a different breed and they may be very high for them. We shall see. But, you know, and it's, I worry about it really falling off the rails just because it's such a new thing and you had a coach here for so long before then. I. But, you know, they've got some good young players and, you know, we'll see what happens over the season. But I think it's interesting, it's always interesting to remember when you bring in a new regime that they're not indebted to any of the players that are there.

Changes and New Perspectives

Right. So, I mean, they're much more willing to make changes or a fresh pair of eyes might see something completely different in players. So, you know, obviously John Schneider is still there. That's some continuity. But I think it might be a little interesting story bubbling underneath a little bit if there's really a Seahawks quarterback controversy on the horizon and the coach. And the new coaches have the hammer more than ever this year because again, it's the first year. So unless you go like two and 15, you're probably not worried about your job and you're like, we'll try a younger quarterback.

Russell Wilson's Legacy

We'll try, you know, we'll try anything right now because we're trying to figure out what the hell's going to work. So wouldn't surprise me. Hey, speaking of quarterbacks we love or do we love, where do we stand on Russell Wilson this year? Do we want him to have a little bit of success so he can feel we feel better about his legacy, or do we want him to continue to spin his wheels fruitlessly? I think my blood loss has been satisfied. Yeah. Yeah. Right. Yeah. I mean, I'm joking. I never really had that feel, that anger towards him, but I think that, you know, I'm rooting for him.

Reflections on Russell's Departure

I'm rooting for him because of what he did here. Well, yeah. And, you know, I think back to going to that first game, one of the most fun games I ever went to in Seattle was his game back as a Bronco quarterback, and it was really fun to root against him that night. But as they leave, and they leave the field after that crazy attempt at a long field goal at the end, and as he's walking off, I'm not thinking, boy, is he doomed. I'm thinking, you know what? I bet they're going to have a pretty good year. Well, it turns out he was doomed in Denver.

Current Situation and Future Prospects

And, yeah, I'm kind of like, it's like at some point you go, all right. I don't need him to be an embarrassment anymore. We'll see. I mean, it's. He's in an interesting place, certainly with a coach. I mean, he's certainly surrounded, with more stability than he had in Denver. Yeah. But I'll say this, guys, you know what Pittsburgh hasn't done in Mike Tomlin's reign as a coach? Head coach. What's that? They've not had a losing season. Oh, gee. Well, there you go. They've never had before. Right? So, I mean, 17 years, I think Tomlin's been there. He's never had a losing season.

Pressure on Coaches and Teams

Right. So, I mean, that's, that's kind of pressure that'll be lurking there. And I, you know, I guess he hasn't had a particularly good training camp. And they've got who they got there. Not jalen hurts, but space and the other house. They quarterback anyway. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. I am, too. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. But anyway, I hope he does all right. I hope he does all. I have no hard feelings towards him. I've decided you and I are symbiotically linked in the mind, because when you start spacing on a name, I immediately.

Lighthearted Banter

If you start spacing on my wife's name, I couldn't come up with it. There's some kind of weird, like. Yeah, yeah. What the hell is her name? Hey, I've got a surprise for you today, pal. Do you?

Introduction of the New Song

I've written another song. You haven't. I have. I felt the timing was right. It's been a long time since we've done a gros with gas song, and I wanted to do it for you today because it's the eve of the college football season, which means it's the eve of the gambling season for everybody. I know some people are betting on baseball and all that and olympics, volleyball, and other things that make you a real, true degenerate. But the football season is where it starts. So I wrote a song, and I want it to be known as the gras with gas gambling fight song. Because nothing's more fun in a football game than the fight song or gambling. Or gambling. And a fight song about gambling, I think, would work. So, yeah, you know, I humbly throw it out to you. Would you like to hear the gras with gas gambling fight song?

Preparing to Share the Song

Lay it on me, brother. Okay, now, you got to understand, I'm going to sing for a minute. There's going to be a little instrumental at the start, then I'm going to sing. Then there's going to be an instrumental interlude. Then we have the big finish. Okay? So just so you're aware of that. And again, Florida State and Georgia Tech kickoff tomorrow in Dublin, Ireland. I saw where they took 40,000 pounds of equipment to Dublin. Between the two of them just seems like a good use of everybody's money, doesn't it? Right. All right. Are you ready? I'm ready. Here we go.

Lyrics of the Gambling Fight Song

Gras and gas are morons. They don't know how to bet. Their new football season will be their worst one yet. If they say over, take the under when they go, favor take the dog. When it comes to football bets, they're both dumb as logs. If you decide to roll the dice and take their dumb advice, you'll watch the game and sigh, you'll wish that you were high, and you'll kiss your cash goodbye. Oh, man. That is outstanding. That is outstanding. I can't tell you how much I've been rehearsing that. And we actually were going to have. Except they're busy this morning. The garage with gas. Backup singers were going to be in here to provide some help, but they're busy so we had to do it alone.

Reflection on the Song and Season

But, you know, I'll keep that here. We could. We could sing it once in a while or maybe never sing it again. Oh, no, it's definitely got to be around again. That's definitely going to be around again. Yeah. College football season starts tomorrow with one game in Ireland. Right? Yeah. And again, it's just the whole economics of college football right now baffles me. Now, I understood Notre Dame going to Ireland to play a game. I got that. But then Nebraska and Northwestern went, all right. Now, Florida State and Georgia Tech, you know, again, the amount of money it's costing to go over there for two schools that are, what, 200 miles apart, how far is it from Tallahassee to Atlanta?

Thoughts on the Game Logistics

Yeah, probably not much more than that. They've loaded everything onto planes, and they're flying over to Dublin. I mean, I don't know. Well, I'm just glad that they're not pretending that they're student athletes anymore. Right. Yeah. Well, they're gaining a lot of experience here in Ireland. Yeah. Right. They said that the thing that both teams ended up having to pack, you'll love it, because they basically tell them, listen, you have to tell us everything you're bringing. Ireland law requires, if you're coming for something, you got to tell us everything you're bringing. And so they were. And then they were talking about stuff that they could get there and stuff they can't get there.

The Mysterious Ranch Dressing

You know what you can't get, apparently, in Ireland that both teams are bringing a lot of is ranch dressing for dipping. Of course. It's nuts. Yeah. I mean, the whole thing, it's like, geez, you know, I remember you and I weren't stressing, why is that not available in iron? It makes me. Why are they bringing tons of. It's tons of it. Yeah, they're. They're bringing it enough to last everybody for the whole week. I want to eat dips. That's all they eat. The pregame meal is dips. Well, dips and carrots. Yeah. Fries and all kinds of stuff that you could dip it in.

Excitement for the Upcoming Game

But it's. I don't know. But I'm excited to see a game that actually matters, as opposed to the fake football we're watching right now. It'll be fun, and it's the only game tomorrow. I love the terminology for it. They call it week zero, and now week one is next week, and everybody's going. The huskies go. Just about everybody gets going next week, and then. And then the NFL after Labor Day. But it's fun to think that the season starting now we have a gambling song to sing when we lose money. So we've got that going for us. Oh, come on. Play for Meghorn.

End of the Conversation

Oh, he won't sing for me. Come on, foghorn. Don't screw us over now. Come on. You're a buddy. There. Oh. Hey, boy. Looks like Sodie pie.
